[edit] History
In 1996 Alex began writing the songs for what would become Cancerslug. The problem was finding people to play it. So Alex started out by teaching this girl he knew how to play bass (sort of) and telling his friend Joseph Hipps to buy a drumset. This line-up never really settled on a name but they were playing much of what would become the first Cancerslug album (Whore).
They recorded demo versions of almost every song from "Whore" but only played one show. So Alex put the band on hold for a little while. He then moved to Tucson and started playing them [the songs] with his friends Mitch Bateman and Brian Ridley. Alex played guitar and sang, Mitch screaming along, and Brian smashing the drums. They had some really great shows and made a lot of noise and had fun, but they thought the bands sound could be tighter and a little more defined. With that in mind, Alex went back to Alabama and decided to do the band right. He called up the only drummer he knew around there at the time, Shane Simmons. They started running through the songs with a friend, Curtis sitting in on bass. After practicing four times they played their first show as "Cancerslug" with this line-up.
Then Craig Johnson joined the band to play bass. He actually joined to play guitar but they needed a bass player so that's what he ended up playing. This was the line-up that recorded "Whore." Alex, Craig, and Shane. The songs that Alex wrote in '96 finally saw the light of day in 1999.
Adam Campbell (one of Alex's favorite bass players) contacted him about joining the band so they decided to switch Craig over to guitar and Adam took the bass duties. This is the line-up that recorded "In The Dumpster Behind The Clinic." Shane never liked their music so he decided to quit the band. Adam knew an amazingly talented drummer named Rocky who agreed to take over on the drums. Craig left the band for personal reasons (although he is still very proud of the music he made with Cancerslug and the shows they played together).
The band now consists of Alex (vocals), Mike (drums), Russell (guitar), Cassie (bass) and Tim (guitar).
