[edit] History
The band began as the "bottom of the barrel" project on the roster of Nigerian-owned Cambridge, Massachusetts label CDs Are Not Records, circa 2004. This label is largely forgotten, although the remarkably poor quality of many of its albums' artwork, recording, mastering, and distribution remain legendary in the greater New England Nollywood-DVD-bootleg circuit in which its owners once operated. While other CDs Are Not Records projects' sounds were often difficult and dissonant, Foz Bozzerstein and the Foozletown Poozlers' songs were quickly distinguished by their simplicity, so common in ethnic Foozletownian melodies.
Foz Bozzerstein had been discovered in 2003 by the label's janitor, Roger Hucek, singing while working diligently at the Bark Park adjacent to his company's distribution center. Hucek convinced a reluctant Bozzerstein to come to the label's basement studio to record an upbeat reggae demo, which would later be released as the song "Fly Like a Eagle" on the debut album. Baby Bird, currently the sole Foozletown Poozler, joined shortly thereafter as co-singer.
Their first appearance on the obscure 2005 CDs Are Not Records compilation Been Downs So Long It Looks Like Up To Me (of which only 15 copies, at most, ever sold) passed without critical reaction.
The 2006 debut CD, Boz Set, of which only a single copy was ever pressed, was sold at Twisted Village [1] in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The album somehow managed to find its way onto the 2006 employee favorites list of Aquarius Records in San Francisco[2], perhaps due to the fact that included with the album was a legal contract granting the purchaser of the CD exclusive rights to the songs in perpetuity. (Also included with the album were a cigarette and some crude drawings of people having sexual intercourse and firing semi-automatic weapons.)
With the demise of CDs Are Not Records in December 2006, Bozzerstein was forced to shelve plans for a second one-copy only album and focus on performing locally. Shows in 2007 and 2008 at swanky Somerville nightspot Razzy's [3]followed, opening for country group Miss Lulu and the Honey Bears among others.
The band is currently recording a multiple copy, follow-up album.
