[edit] Mike McColgan
Michael "Mike" McColgan is best known as the original lead singer of the Dropkick Murphys and the current lead singer of Street Dogs.
[edit] Biography
He grew up in the Savin Hill neighborhood in Dorchester, MA. There he attended catholic school and was introduced to music while singing in the school's choir and by a friend with similar musical interest. "My friend Danny introduced me to the Clash when I was in sixth grade. We had a guitar, an amp, a microphone, and a crappy PA. We’d have a few lagers, and we’d be singing out the window on Victoria Street."
Before becoming a professional musician, McColgan fought in the first Gulf War as a soldier. In 1996 he became part of the Dropkick Murphys. McColgan's last apperance in the band. McColgan has said that the split from DKM was amicable and has been quoted as saying, "I have no misgivings, no regrets…and there are no bad feelings...I still talk to those guys." The full-length album Do or Die was McColgan's last project with the Dropkick Murphy's and in 2000 Mike realized his life-long dream of becoming a Boston Fire Department firefighter.
In 2002 McColgan formed the Street Dogs. Their first album Savin Hill is named for the neighborhood in Dorchester, Ma where McColgan grew up. The subsequent tour with Flogging Molly helped lead to their current success. In 2004 with the release of their second album Back to the World they found even more success and McColgan left the BFD to focus on his music. With critical success in hand McColgan and the Street Dogs began touring with bands such as Social Distortion, Tiger Army, Bad Religion, Millencolin, The Bouncing Souls, and The Briefs. In 2006 Fading American Dream was released.
Mike McColgan has been quoted as saying, "That the band is a full-time band. That whatever Street Dogs is doing, whether recording or playing live, we're gonna give 110%. Always. But the thing i'd like to convey most through bio or anything is that this music has an honesty and earnestness to it. The lyrics are from legitimate life experiences from the band members."
